Generally a fair is a get-together of people in a place of outdoor entertainment. In India most of the fairs are either religious or social. Fairs are held on different occasions all over the world. They are the life of the society.
During last April I visited the Chaitra Mela. It is a great fair of our area. This fair is held on each Tuesday in the month of Chaitra every year at the Tara Tarini Hill. I visited the fair with my parents and grandparents. We went there on the third Tuesday of Chaitra. It is about 35 kilometres away from Brahmapur. On this day a large number of vehicles run to this place from Brahmapur and different other towns. But we went there in a hired car early in the morning.
By the time we reached there, the place was over-crowded. The temple of Goddesses Tara Tarini is situated on the hill-top. There are hundreds of steps from the bottom to the top of the hill. Most of the people climb up the hill and go to the temple. But we went there by the rope way. Travelling by the rope way was a new experience of mine. We offered puja to Goddesses Tara Tarini and came down the hill. There were thousands people creating hue and cry. The police were maintaining law and order. They kept sharp eyes on pick-pockets and miscreants.
On the fair ground we saw many kinds of shops and stalls. There were shops of fancy goods. There were also a number of sweet stalls and toy shops. Children were busy buying different kinds of toys, balls, whistles, balloons etc. My parents bought some household goods and sweets. I bought some toys of my choice.
People of nearby villages entertained the visitors with Odishi Kirtan. Children were enjoying themselves in round-abouts. I joined them for some minutes. The puppet show was the main attraction of the fair. My visit to the fair was full of thrilling experiences. I have never visited such a big fair and never had such a lot of pleasure and rejoicing.
