A historic or heritage site having some remarkable feature in the history is called a historical place. There are several historical places in the state of Odisha. Most people like to visit these places when they want to have relaxation from their routine work. A visit to a historical place gives the visitor a lot of pleasure. During the last Christmas Holidays I had the opportunity of visiting the Sun temple at Konark. It was a dream that came true for me to have visited the temple which I have heard and read in my books.

Most people like to visit these places when they want to have relaxation from their routine work. A visit to a historical place gives the visitor a lot of pleasure. During the last Christmas Holidays I had the opportunity of visiting the Sun temple at Konark. It was a dream that came true for me to have visited the temple which I have heard and read in my books.
Konark is located about 60 kilometres away from the Temple city Bhubaneswar and 35 Kilometres away from the holy town Puri. It is situated on the Bay of Bengal near Chandrabhaga. Thousands of tourists throng to Konark every day. The teachers and students of our school planned to visit Konark during the last Christmas Holidays. We went there in a hired bus on 28th December 2023. All arrangements for the trip such as hiring a bus, carrying food and water etc. were made in the due time.
The Konark temple is a world-famous monument. It attracts tourists from most of the countries of the world. It was built by Narasingha Dev of Ganga Dynasty in the thirteen century. It is said that the Chief architect behind the construction of this temple was Bishu Maharana. The Konark temple is an outstanding testimony of art, sculpture and architecture of the thirteen century Odisha. The temple was built in the form of a chariot with twelve ornamental wheels and seven horses for drawing the chariot. The main temple has now been partly damaged. But the remaining part of it is worth-watching.
The special attraction of the temple are the huge wheels, horses, elephants, beautiful figures, dancing girls and musicians. They all speak about the excellent of Odia sculpture and the creativity of Odia sculptors. We went round the temple and exclaimed to see the fine stone work of our ancestors. The Konark temple is one of the very few Sun temples of India. It is also known as 'Black Pagoda' because it is built out of black granite. All of us were wonder-stuck by the beautiful figures on the temple wall.
My visit to Konark is a memorable incident and full of wonderful experiences. It is said that a thing of beauty is a joy forever. The loving memory of the beautiful Sun temple is really unforgettable. I would like to visit this place again. Everybody should visit Konark at least once in lifetime.
